What Are Energy Recovery Ventilators?

Energy recovery ventilators are devices used as part of a whole–home approach to proper ventilation, which can help with moisture control and overall energy efficiency in your home. Like an air source heat pump, ERVs save energy by using a heat exchanger to recover the heat that would have been vented outside the home and the cool air exhaust in the summer. While they are only used to provide fresh air in the home, they are an ideal mechanical ventilation option if you want a more energy–efficient solution than a whole–house fan or attic fan.

Unlike heat recovery ventilators (HRV), ERVs transfer some of the moisture from the air outside, so in hot, humid climates they may not be ideal. However, this means that they are ideal in winter because they help add moisture back into the air. Keep in mind that they are not substitutes for whole–home humidifiers, and if you do have moisture issues, you should also have a dehumidifier installed as part of your AC system.

Homes that are sealed too tightly may also have increased issues with high levels of moisture inside the home. This is due to the fact that the air conditioning system may not run often, which means that the dehumidifier won’t be as effective. Discuss the ERV option with your technician during your next scheduled service. A qualified professional will know what type of system is right for your particular home.

Ventilation and Moisture Control in Seattle Homes

Proper ventilation is another factor in indoor air quality. Ventilation not only helps circulate fresh air into your home, but it can actually help increase efficiency by moving air properly throughout your home. Adding a ventilation system will keep the home cooler in the summer and distribute the heat that naturally rises to your attic. Without proper insulation, ventilation may not be as effective, so make sure your home is adequately sealed and insulated. This will also help with moisture control, which can reduce the chances of mold growth. If you install an energy recovery ventilator, it will need regular cleanings to prevent mold growth on the components of the equipment.
